ARTS — Cover story
An exhibition can begin with a question. The one Mudec asks is simple and, on reflection, urgent: what is in an artist's room before there is a painting? “Matisse. Il mondo in una stanza” (The World in a Room), curated by Ellen McBreen and Chiara Gatti, answers with around one hundred works across eight sections. Beside the paintings, the works on paper and the sculptures, it places the objects and the textiles Matisse kept around him and looked at every day. It is an exhibition about...

Dalí e la Moda
Palazzo Reale, Milano
Palazzo Reale, Milano. 24 September 2026 – 31 January 2027
Image created with AI by Vertigini Studio,
inspired by “Dalí and Fashion”

Open at Palazzo Reale in Milan until 31 January 2027, “Dalí and Fashion” gathers more than 200 works and documents, from paintings, drawings and photographs to garments, jewels and films, on loan from the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, the Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, the Museo Reina Sofía and the archives of Schiaparelli, Chanel, Dior and Rabanne. Its thesis is precise: Dalí went to fashion because fashion already had what he needed, a system for producing images at speed and a surface, the dressed body, that people carry into the street. We saw it at the press preview on 23 September, in the middle of Milano Fashion Week.

What is in an artist’s room before there is a painting? At Mudec, “Matisse. Il mondo in una stanza”, curated by Ellen McBreen and Chiara Gatti, answers with around one hundred works across eight sections. Beside the paintings, the works on paper and the sculptures, it places the objects and textiles Matisse kept around him and called his “working library”. African, Islamic, Russian, Chinese and Pacific art appear here as the forces that shaped his painting from within.
